Neutra/Conrad Residence, Madrid, New Mexico
(1,000 sq.ft. addition and remodel)

The imagery of this home addition is based on the town's mining history. The entire town of Madrid was owned and built by the coal mining company. As a result, the addition reflects the simple pitched roof shed construction and corrugated siding commonly found throughout the mining town. However, for the exterior siding we used Corten steel, which quickly rusts in the top layer to give a beautiful orange color, and it protects the metal from further rust.

Not only were mining elements used, but form and massing. The addition has been said to resemble an old one room school house or church. This is not by accident, but intended to add another layer of richness to home. The overall design is layered with familiar forms and materials, but used in a much more contemporary and playful way.
